In the luxemburgish moselle valley of the 19th century, there were much more vineyards planted with red grapes than nowadays.
At that time, St Laurent, an old variety from Bordeaux, was a domestic in Luxembourg.
Since 1910, after the devastating phylloxéra invasion, and mostly because of the increasing demand for white wine in order to produce sparkling wine, the red varieties were given up.
But in 2004, the luxemburgish gouvernment, by the wine institute in Remich, allowed a “new” red wine variety in their “Moselle Luxembourgeoise – Appellation Contrôlée” system (better known as “Marque Nationale”) and St Laurent vines were planted, so that the first grapes could be harvested in 2007.
The red wine from St Laurent grapes is quite different from the best known Pinot Noir, it is much more complex and needs quite more time to evolve, that’s why we waited until 2013 before selling our first vintage, the 2008!
St Laurent will stay longer in barriques to achieve its complex body and aroma, such as red fruit like cherry, comparable with a bordeaux bouquet and with a long aftertaste; it’s colour is dark red and violet.
This strong red wine increases in popularity and can easily accompany a multitude of dishes as red meat and cheese, and it should be found in any well-stocked wine cellar. Nowadays, only seven luxemburgish winegrowers are proposing St Laurent!
You will be astonished by noticing the nuances that this Luxembourg wine makes you discover! We suggest to decant this wine one hour before serving it.
Caves Krier Frères presents this wine in a dark Bordeaux bottle of 75 cl.
AOP MOSELLE LUXEMBOURGEOISE:
Since 1935, the Luxembourg government has been controlling the quality of the wines produced in our Moselle Valley. First the wine producer has to make a formal request for each barrel he wishes to introduce. Then, after a lab analysis, the wine is tasted by a commission of 12 blindfolded members who evaluate the wine on a scale of 20 points.
• 12,0 – 13,9 points: AOP Marque Nationale
• 14,0 – 15,9 points: AOP MN – Vin Classé
• 16,0 – 17,9 points: AOP MN – Premier Cru
• 18,0 – 20,0 points: AOP MN – Grand Premier Cru
The official back label on the wine bottles is a guarantee of the governmental quality control.
St Laurent does not have the right to any classifications higher than the AOP Marque Nationale.
